How to Prepare Your Yard for New Sod Installation
November 3, 2025

Installing new sod is one of the fastest ways to transform your outdoor space. But before those fresh rolls of green are laid down, your yard needs proper preparation to ensure success. At Rosalio Padron Lawn Service, we’ve seen it all—from lawns that thrive for years to those that struggle due to poor prep.

If you're planning a sod installation soon, here's how to properly prepare your yard so your new lawn roots, grows, and stays green.

1. Remove Existing Grass and Weeds

One of the first and most important steps is to clear the area of existing grass, weeds, and debris. Leaving old turf or weed roots behind can interfere with the new sod’s ability to take root.

Methods include:

  • Manual removal using shovels or sod cutters
  • Herbicide application (be sure to wait a few days before laying sod)
  • Rototilling, if the area is large

We always recommend starting with a clean slate.

2. Test and Improve Your Soil

Healthy sod starts with healthy soil. A soil test helps determine pH, nutrient levels, and soil type—so you can amend accordingly.

Tips for better soil:

  • Add compost or topsoil to improve nutrient content and drainage
  • Till the soil to about 4–6 inches deep
  • Remove rocks, roots, and debris that could block root growth

We often recommend adding a starter fertilizer or organic compost blend before laying sod for better results.

3. Grade and Level Your Lawn

Proper grading ensures good drainage and prevents standing water that can kill sod or invite pests.

Best practices:

  • Slope soil away from your home’s foundation (¼ inch per foot)
  • Fill in low spots and flatten high areas
  • Use a landscape rake or leveling tool for even distribution

Our team uses laser levels and years of experience to ensure every lawn drains properly.

4. Water the Soil (But Not Too Much)

Before the sod arrives, the soil should be moist—but not soggy. This helps the new sod stay hydrated from the bottom while it’s taking root.

How to prep with water:

  • Water 24–48 hours before installation
  • Avoid oversaturating the soil—aim for a damp sponge feel
  • Don’t water again until after sod is installed

Proper timing is key. We’ll guide you on the best watering schedule for your yard and weather conditions.

5. Plan for Irrigation and Traffic

Sod needs consistent watering during its first few weeks, so it’s essential to plan ahead for sprinkler systems or irrigation.

Our tips:

  • Check sprinkler coverage zones before installation
  • Make adjustments to ensure the entire yard is covered
  • Minimize foot traffic on the new sod for 2–3 weeks

If you don’t already have a sprinkler system, we can help install or upgrade one for ideal watering.
